South Korea Resumes Gyeongwon Line Railway to Wonsan

South Korea has announced its decision to resume work on the Gyeongwon Line cross-border railway, a project stalled for nearly a decade.

This initiative aims to eventually connect to North Korea’s eastern city of Wonsan, with Unification Minister Chung Dong-young confirming plans to restart repairs on a damaged section near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Revitalizing Border Regions

The ministry anticipates that restoring this railway will significantly improve access to peace and ecological tourism areas located within the DMZ.

Additionally, the project is expected to boost economic activity across the nearby border regions, fostering development in these sensitive areas.

• The Gyeongwon Line project was initially launched in 2015.
• Work on the railway was subsequently paused in 2016.
• North Korea destroyed existing road and rail connections across the border in 2024.

Despite North Korea’s recent actions to sever cross-border connections and treat South Korea as a hostile state, President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the importance of pursuing policies of peace and coexistence.

Expanding Cooperation Fund Use

The Unification Ministry also proposed broadening the application of the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund, which was originally established for cross-border exchanges.

The expanded use would support various initiatives within South Korea, particularly focusing on specific strategic areas.

• Contribute to reunification efforts.
• Advance North Korea research.

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun further noted the current diplomatic stalemate, indicating that multilateral talks involving North Korea, the United States, and China are presently improbable.

South Korea’s commitment to restarting the Gyeongwon Line underscores its continued efforts towards fostering dialogue and stability, even amid persistent inter-Korean tensions.
