Skyroot Aerospace Achieves Unicorn Status with $60 Million Funding Round

Hyderabad-headquartered spacetech startup Skyroot Aerospace has successfully raised $60 million in a funding round, co-led by Sherpalo Ventures and GIC. This significant investment has propelled the company to a pre-money valuation of $1.1 billion, officially making it India’s first spacetech unicorn. The funding underscores the growing investor confidence in India’s burgeoning private space sector and Skyroot’s ambitious plans for commercial space exploration.

The latest funding round saw robust participation from existing investors, including Greenko Group and Arkam Ventures, alongside new strategic investors such as BlackRock, Playbook Partners, and Shanghvi Family Office. This infusion of capital is earmarked for critical operational expansion, particularly to support the commercial launch operations of Skyroot’s flagship Vikram-1 rocket, a key component in its strategy to provide on-demand access to space for small satellite operators.

Founders and Strategic Vision Driving Growth

Founded in 2018 by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot Aerospace has rapidly established itself as a frontrunner in the Indian space technology landscape. The company’s vision is to democratize space access through innovative and cost-effective launch solutions. The Vikram-1 rocket is central to this vision, designed to cater to the increasing demand for launching small satellites into low Earth orbit.

As part of the funding agreement, Ram Shriram, Founder of Sherpalo Ventures and a notable early investor in Google, will join Skyroot’s board of directors. Shriram’s extensive experience in scaling technology ventures is expected to provide invaluable guidance as Skyroot enters its next phase of growth and commercialization.

Vikram-1 Rocket: A Leap Towards Orbital Launch Capabilities

The newly raised capital will be instrumental in advancing the development and operational readiness of the Vikram-1 rocket. This orbital launch vehicle is engineered to deploy small satellites weighing up to 350 kilograms into low Earth orbit. The strategic importance of Vikram-1 lies in its design, which emphasizes rapid manufacturing and high launch cadence, crucial for meeting the dynamic needs of the global small satellite market.

Skyroot previously made history in 2022 with the successful launch of Vikram-S, which became the first privately built rocket in India to reach space. The upcoming Vikram-1 represents a significant step up, transitioning from suborbital flights to full orbital deployment capabilities, a critical milestone for any aspiring space launch provider.

Investor Confidence and Market Validation

The substantial investment and resulting unicorn status are a powerful validation of Skyroot’s technological prowess and market potential. Ram Shriram expressed his optimism, stating, “Access to space is one of the key challenges of our time. Skyroot is building the foundational infrastructure for that future with the best cost-to-performance ratio in the orbital-launch industry, and what the team has achieved is remarkable. I am proud to deepen my partnership with them as they take their next giant leap.”

The Vikram-1 rocket is constructed with an all-carbon composite structure and features proprietary in-house developed solid and liquid propulsion systems. Skyroot claims this advanced engineering is optimized for efficiency and rapid deployment, positioning the company favorably in the competitive global launch services market.

A Milestone for India’s Space Ecosystem

The achievement has been widely recognized within the industry. Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (retd.), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), commented on Skyroot’s success: “Skyroot Aerospace becoming India’s first space-tech unicorn marks a defining moment for the country’s private space ecosystem. This milestone is far more than a financial achievement; it is the symbolic coming-of-age of India’s space startup landscape and a powerful validation of the technological ingenuity, entrepreneurial ambition, and commercial agility that Indian companies now bring to the global space sector.”

Skyroot Aerospace’s journey from a startup to a unicorn highlights the transformative potential of India’s private space sector. With this significant funding, the company is well-positioned to accelerate its mission to provide reliable and affordable access to space, contributing to India’s growing prominence in the global aerospace industry.
