Skyroot Aerospace Achieves Unicorn Status with $60 Million Funding Round

Indian spacetech startup Skyroot Aerospace has announced a significant funding round, securing $60 million (approximately ₹570 crore). This latest infusion of capital, co-led by existing investors Sherpalo Ventures, founded by American billionaire Ram Shriram, and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, has propelled the company’s valuation to $1.1 billion. This achievement marks Skyroot Aerospace as India’s first spacetech company to reach unicorn status, a significant milestone in the nation’s burgeoning space industry.

Key Investors and Valuation Boost

The $60 million funding round saw substantial participation from a distinguished group of investors. Alongside Sherpalo Ventures and GIC, the round included contributions from BlackRock, Playbook Partners, Shanghvi Family Office, and existing backers such as the founders of Greenko Group and Arkam Ventures. The successful closure of this round has more than doubled Skyroot’s pre-money valuation from $550 million in 2023 to the current $1.1 billion. To date, Skyroot Aerospace has raised a total of $155 million, with this round significantly bolstering its financial standing and market perception.

Company Vision and Product Development

Founded in 2018 by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot Aerospace is dedicated to developing advanced space launch vehicles. The company specializes in modular space launch vehicles, a design that offers enhanced flexibility by allowing interchangeability of components based on specific mission requirements and payload capacities. This innovative approach is crucial for catering to the dynamic needs of the small satellite market, a rapidly growing segment of the global space economy.

Strategic Use of Funds for Future Growth

The newly acquired capital is earmarked for several strategic initiatives aimed at scaling Skyroot’s operations and accelerating its product roadmap. A primary focus will be on establishing a consistent launch cadence for its Vikram-1 orbital rocket. The funds will also be utilized to expand manufacturing capabilities, ensuring the company can meet increasing demand. Furthermore, Skyroot plans to enhance its range of missions and expedite the development of its next-generation rocket, Vikram-2. This next-generation vehicle is envisioned as a 1-tonne class launch vehicle, distinguished by its advanced cryogenic stage, which is critical for achieving higher orbital trajectories.

Paving the Way for India’s Private Space Sector

Skyroot’s achievement of unicorn status underscores the growing maturity and potential of India’s private space sector. The company is on the cusp of launching Vikram-1, which is set to be India’s first privately developed orbital rocket. This development signifies a new era for indigenous space exploration and commercialization, driven by private enterprise. The successful funding round and impending launch are expected to catalyze further investment and innovation within the Indian spacetech ecosystem, positioning Skyroot Aerospace as a leader in this transformative industry.
