Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visits Canada & US (Aug 25-Sep 2, 2026) to strengthen economic partnerships, investment, and global cooperation.

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is slated for an official visit to Canada and the United States, running from August 25 to September 2, 2026. The core objectives of this extensive trip include fortifying bilateral economic and financial partnerships, deepening investment linkages, and advancing cooperation on shared global economic priorities.

The Canadian segment of her itinerary begins in Toronto, where she will engage in the inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue. This crucial discussion will involve Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

Canada’s Economic and Investment Focus

This dialogue aims to reinforce the economic and financial dimensions of the India-Canada partnership by addressing several key areas:

  • Macroeconomic developments
  • Financial sector cooperation
  • Bilateral investment opportunities
  • Shared international priorities

Recent bilateral discussions have also explored various sectors, including energy, critical minerals, technology, innovation, and resilient supply chains. Efforts continue towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

In Toronto, Minister Sitharaman will also lead an Investment Roundtable, gathering prominent CEOs, presidents, and senior representatives. Participants will largely hail from the energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals sectors.

This roundtable seeks to foster direct business-to-business connections, identify new investment prospects, and promote long-term commercial partnerships. Specific opportunities within the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City-International Financial Services Centre (GIFT City-IFSC) will also be highlighted.

Further engagements in Canada include one-on-one meetings with Canadian company leaders to discuss India’s growth prospects and expanding their business presence. A fireside conversation with Minister Champagne, hosted by the Canadian Club of Toronto and the Canada-India Business Council, is planned, alongside an interaction with the Indian diaspora.

United States Itinerary and Global Summit

The US portion of her visit, scheduled from August 28 to September 2, will encompass stops in Chicago, Asheville, and New York. In Chicago, Minister Sitharaman will participate in a roundtable conference with investors and engage with private sector CEOs.

These discussions will primarily focus on India’s investment opportunities, its economic outlook, and strategies for strengthening business and investment partnerships between the two nations. She will also visit the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago to exchange views on fostering innovation and technology commercialization.

This Chicago visit also includes efforts to enhance linkages with India’s rapidly growing startup ecosystem and an interaction with the Indian community. Following her engagements in Chicago, Minister Sitharaman will travel to Asheville, North Carolina.

In Asheville, she will lead the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting, scheduled for August 31 and September 1. This significant gathering, held under the US G20 Presidency, will convene finance ministers, central bank governors, and senior economic officials from around the world.

Overall, Minister Sitharaman’s comprehensive visit underscores India’s commitment to deepening strategic economic alliances and influencing global financial dialogues.
