Opposition politician Kenneth Tiong Boon Kiat has initiated parliamentary scrutiny in Singapore regarding Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) financial backing for Air India, which seeks a substantial $1.5 billion in funding from its stakeholders.

Tiong questioned the commercial rationale behind SIA, a 25% owner of Air India, utilizing funds from Temasek Holdings, the Singapore government’s investment firm and SIA’s largest shareholder, to support the Indian carrier.

Parliamentary Scrutiny Over Funding

The politician emphasized that Singaporeans do not owe Air India any support, advocating for SIA to fund its investment independently without relying on public funds.

This parliamentary inquiry follows a Reuters report detailing Air India’s request for fresh equity from its primary stakeholders, Tata Sons, which holds a 75% ownership, and SIA.

Air India’s Financial Challenges

Singapore Airlines recently reported its first quarterly net loss since 2022, attributing this downturn partly to Air India’s underperformance and escalating jet fuel costs.
