Shipki La Trade Route Reopens: New ₹1.7 Cr Mart Boosts India-China Commerce

The historic Shipki La pass, a crucial trade route connecting India and China in Himachal Pradesh, has officially reopened after a six-year hiatus. This resumption of cross-border activities saw 16 traders begin operations on Saturday, marking a significant step for regional commerce.

Facilitating Cross-Border Barter

A newly established Chhuppan Trade Mart, constructed at a cost of ₹1.70 crore, is now operational to facilitate these trade exchanges. The system functions on a traditional barter basis, allowing traders to conduct business.

Indian traders are granted a 72-hour window to operate within Tibetan territory for their transactions. This structured approach aims to streamline the exchange process.

Key Trade Guidelines and Permitted Goods

The Union Ministry of Commerce has outlined specific guidelines governing the types of goods permitted for exchange. These regulations define the scope of imports and exports for Indian traders utilizing the route.
