Shein IPO Raises $1.74B in Hong Kong Amid Market Caution
By Business Desk
Fast-fashion giant Shein prices Hong Kong IPO at $1.74 billion, raising capital despite a cautious market and initial gray-market share dip.
Shein has priced its Hong Kong initial public offering, raising HK$13.60 billion ($1.74 billion) from the share sale. The fast-fashion retailer offered 280 million shares at HK$48.56 each, falling within its pre-announced range.
IPO Key Figures
- Total Raised: HK$13.60 billion ($1.74 billion)
- Shares Offered: 280 million
- Price Per Share: HK$48.56
- HK Public Offering Subscription: 5.63 times oversubscribed
- International Portion Subscription: 2.59 times oversubscribed
Trading for Shein shares is set to commence on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Tuesday. However, gray-market trading on Monday saw shares drop by more than 10% before their official debut.
Analysts like Kenny Ng from China Everbright Securities International pointed to a mild oversubscription rate, suggesting investor caution. This sentiment stems from fluid international trade policies and ongoing geopolitical tensions impacting global consumer sentiment.
Regulatory Hurdles & Strategy
Shein’s market debut follows abandoned plans to list in New York and London, partly due to mounting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns. The company has faced regulatory investigations and fines in various countries.
- Current Investigations: European Commission, U.S. Federal Trade Commission
- Past Fines: France (alleged fake discounts), Italy (greenwashing)
The Singapore-based, Chinese-founded company also reported a $99 million quarterly loss in late July. This loss was influenced by the removal of an import duty exemption for small packages in the United States and a $328 million fair-value charge on convertible redeemable preferred shares due to an accounting change.
Proceeds Allocation
Proceeds from the IPO are primarily earmarked for three strategic areas:
- Improving technology
- Enhancing brand awareness
- Expanding global presence
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing confirmed that options and short selling of Shein shares will be permitted from their trading debut.
