Key Highlights

The Reserve Bank of India highlights the significant strengthening and enhanced resilience of India’s rural economy and agriculture sector over the past 15 years.

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra confirmed that the rural economy and the agriculture sector have significantly enhanced their resilience over recent years. This strengthening is attributed to the growth of allied activities, expanded irrigation, greater farm mechanisation, and improved crop varieties.

These advancements have substantially reduced the impact of rainfall deficiencies on agricultural output. Allied activities have been particularly crucial, helping rural households mitigate income losses during times of agricultural stress.

Factors Driving Agricultural Resilience

RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta elaborated that data spanning the past 15 years distinctly illustrates the rural economy’s reinforced resilience. She noted that the overall economy has become remarkably robust, a resilience that extends prominently to the agriculture sector and the broader rural economy.

Gupta further explained that agriculture and its allied sectors increasingly complement each other. The notable expansion of irrigated land has made the agricultural sector less vulnerable to the unpredictable nature of rainfall deficiencies.

Key Pillars of Sectoral Strength

Government initiatives have led to a much larger and steadily increasing share of irrigated area, meaning weather variations, while still relevant, have less impact than in the past. Additionally, enhanced access to farm credit, increased mechanisation, and advancements in crop and seed varieties have further solidified the sector’s foundation.

Collectively, these comprehensive measures highlight a healthy rural economy and a highly resilient agriculture sector, according to RBI officials.
