Rat in Blinkit Freezer: Food Safety Alarms Sounded

A recent incident involving a live rat found in an ice cream freezer at a Blinkit store in Kalyan, Maharashtra, is giving shoppers pause. This discovery, captured in a viral video, highlights serious hygiene concerns, especially for ready-to-eat items like ice cream.

This isn’t an isolated event, but rather a spotlight on an ongoing food safety crisis unfolding across India’s quick commerce sector. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a comprehensive crackdown, inspecting numerous online food delivery hubs.

FDA Uncovers Widespread Violations

The FDA’s inspections have revealed a troubling pattern of hygiene and storage violations at quick commerce fulfillment centers. These findings are leading to swift action against several prominent platforms.

• The Maharashtra FDA suspended the licenses of 14 establishments linked to quick commerce platforms.
• Specifically, this included 5 Blinkit facilities, 5 Zepto facilities, and 2 Instamart facilities.
• Out of 86 facilities inspected in total, 60 improvement notices were issued.
• One facility’s operations were temporarily suspended following serious breaches.

Inside the Warehouses: More Than Just Pests

Beyond the Kalyan incident, other Blinkit facilities have shown a host of issues. A Ghatkopar store struggled with inadequate drainage, improper waste disposal, and poor temperature control for frozen goods.

This particular location also had unprotected lighting, general poor housekeeping, and even cockroach infestations. Furthermore, damaged infrastructure and insufficient segregation of food items compounded the problems.

Another Blinkit facility in Malad West faced license suspension after inspectors found its chiller room operating above the prescribed temperature. It also lacked essential medical examination records and protective equipment for food handlers, underlining a systemic disregard for safety protocols.

These ongoing enforcement campaigns underscore the critical need for quick commerce businesses to strictly adhere to food storage and hygiene regulations, impacting consumer trust and safety.
