Get ready to see more traditional Indian handlooms in your social media feeds! Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to use the popular ‘Get Ready With Me’ (GRWM) trend to spotlight India’s rich handloom diversity online.
This digital push comes ahead of National Handloom Day, observed annually on **August 7**. The Prime Minister took to X (formerly Twitter) encouraging people to share videos featuring their favorite handloom products using the hashtag #NationalHandloomDay.
Digital Spotlight on Craftsmanship
The call to action aims to leverage social media’s reach, making traditional weaves relatable to a younger, digitally native audience. By engaging with trends like GRWM, handloom products can gain significant visibility and appreciation.
The Ministry of Textiles is preparing to celebrate the **12th National Handloom Day** at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre (RBCC) in New Delhi. This event highlights India’s rich heritage and the vital contributions of its weaving community.
Honoring Weavers and Heritage
President Droupadi Murmu will be the Chief Guest for the celebrations. She will be joined by several dignitaries.

The occasion will also see the release of four commemorative postage stamps celebrating India’s diverse handloom weaving traditions. Two publications, ‘Earth. Root. Thread – Aal Dyed Handloom Textiles of Central India’ and the Handloom Awards Book **2025**, are also scheduled for unveiling.
The Handloom Sector’s Impact
An exhibition showcasing award-winning handloom products will be held alongside the main celebrations. Visitors can witness live demonstrations of traditional Kani weaving and Wall Hanging weaving.
Beyond the main function on August 7, 2026, additional events are planned. These include exhibitions and conclaves for designers and Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHT).
According to the Ministry of Textiles, India’s handloom sector is crucial for livelihoods. It supports over **3.5 million people** across the country, with women making up more than **70 percent** of the workforce. This sector also champions environmentally sustainable production practices.
National Handloom Day is observed annually on **August 7** to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement. This movement, launched on **August 7, 1905**, provided a renewed push for indigenous industries, including India’s handloom sector, acknowledging its enduring cultural contributions.
