PhysicsWallah Halts Student Lending Plan Amid Share Surge

Edtech major PhysicsWallah has officially reversed its strategy to directly provide financing to students through its wholly owned Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) subsidiary, FinZ Finance. This significant strategic pivot, announced recently, is primarily aimed at materially reducing the company’s exposure to balance sheet and credit-related risks. The decision was met positively by the market, resulting in a notable surge in the company’s shares.

Strategic Shift and New Approach

The Alakh Pandey-led edtech firm has clarified that it is now restructuring its overall lending strategy. Instead of direct lending, PhysicsWallah has established partnerships with multiple leading regulated third-party NBFCs. These collaborations are designed to effectively address and facilitate the student lending needs, ensuring that financial services remain accessible to its student base without the company taking on direct lending risks.

Market Reaction and Share Performance

This reversal comes after a period where the company’s shares were under considerable pressure. Investor concern mounted following PhysicsWallah’s earlier announcement last week regarding its decision to infuse ₹120 crore into FinZ Finance, signaling its intent to enter the direct lending space. However, in the wake of today’s strategic announcement, the company’s shares experienced a robust rally, surging by as much as 17.8% to touch an intraday high of ₹108.45 on the (BSE).

Rationale and Industry Context

The initial move into student financing had generated significant apprehension among shareholders. This apprehension stemmed largely from the broader edtech sector’s challenging history with direct lending models, which have often been plagued by issues related to loan recovery and regulatory scrutiny. Reports, including an in-depth analysis by Inc42, had highlighted the substantial challenges PhysicsWallah would likely encounter, particularly in maintaining stringent lending discipline and navigating complex regulatory frameworks if it pursued lending from its own books.

PhysicsWallah cofounder Prateek Maheshwari provided insight into the company’s change of plans. He stated, “We received feedback from our partners that our core strength lies in building communities and our online business. Our lending business is best left to regulated third-party NBFCs who have created robust underwriting capabilities.” This statement underscores the company’s commitment to focusing on its core educational offerings while delegating specialized financial services to expert partners.

This strategic pivot indicates PhysicsWallah’s intent to reinforce its business model by leveraging its primary strengths in education and community building. By entrusting the lending function to established and regulated financial institutions, the company aims to enhance its financial stability, mitigate operational complexities, and address the concerns previously raised by its investor base regarding its foray into direct lending.
