U.S. billionaire investor Peter Thiel, via his hedge fund Thiel Macro LLC, has committed $76 million to secure a 1% stake in Vista, a prominent oil producer operating within Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation.
This strategic investment involves the acquisition of approximately 1.2 million American Depositary Shares of Vista, marking a significant entry into Argentina’s energy sector.
Key Investment Details
- Investment Value: $76 million
- Stake Acquired: 1% in Vista
- Shares Purchased: Approximately 1.2 million American Depositary Shares
- Investing Entity: Thiel Macro LLC
Thiel Macro LLC’s declared portfolio stands at $418.7 million, as per a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Its holdings span various sectors, including stakes in Vistra, Amazon, and several U.S. power and energy companies such as American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, and X-Energy.
Argentina’s Energy Landscape
The investment arrives amidst Argentina’s concerted efforts to attract increased foreign capital into Vaca Muerta, a vast shale oil and gas formation located in Patagonia. This region is critical, housing the world’s second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest oil reserves.
Vista, a key player in this formation, currently produces around 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The company has already invested more than $6.5 billion in Argentina and, in May, elevated its investment and production outlook for Vaca Muerta.
Thiel’s move follows a meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires four months prior. Discussions during this encounter focused on economic policies and President Milei’s strong opposition to wealth taxes, signaling a receptive environment for such investments.
This capital injection aligns directly with President Milei’s broader agenda to draw new technology and energy-intensive investments into Argentina, leveraging the nation’s natural resources and policy frameworks.
