One97 Communications, Paytm’s parent, reports its first full-year profit in FY26, driven by strategic shifts and significant investment income.

Paytm Reports First Full-Year Profit in FY26

One97 Communications, the parent entity of India’s prominent fintech platform Paytm, has announced a significant financial achievement, reporting its first-ever full-year profit of ₹552 Cr in the fiscal year 2026. This marks a substantial turnaround from the ₹663 Cr loss recorded in the previous fiscal year. The company’s revenue from operations also saw a healthy increase of 22%, reaching ₹8,437 Cr. This profitability milestone comes after nearly five years since its public listing, addressing a long-standing market query about the company’s ability to achieve consistent profitability.

Complementing its profit, Paytm concluded FY26 with a robust balance sheet, boasting a cash balance of ₹13,315 Cr. This substantial capital reserve has become a key contributor to the company’s financial performance, generating considerable income through interest and investment returns. This income, largely derived from fixed deposits, debt mutual funds, and dollar-denominated assets, has been quietly accumulating, with estimates suggesting annual earnings between ₹750 Cr to ₹900 Cr. A significant portion of this income is categorized under ‘other income,’ which stood at ₹854 Cr in FY26, representing nearly 47% of the company’s profit before tax of ₹582 Cr for the year.

The J-Curve Phenomenon and Operating Leverage

Analysts view Paytm’s current phase through the lens of the ‘J-curve’ phenomenon, a concept describing the initial investment-heavy losses of platform companies before achieving scale-driven profitability. Sunny Agarwal, head of equity research at SBI Securities, highlighted that for listed platform companies like Paytm, free cash flow is emerging as a crucial positive metric. This cash is being strategically deployed for both inorganic and organic growth opportunities, while also serving as a buffer against increasing competition.

The significance of Paytm’s FY26 results, according to Agarwal, lies not just in the headline profit figure but in the fact that its core businesses are demonstrating a shift towards cash generation rather than consumption. As internet platforms reach a certain scale, operating leverage can significantly impact profitability. This trend is already observable in segments like quick commerce, where companies are guiding towards profitability. Similar profitability transitions have been noted in Chinese internet platforms, which initially prioritized scale before focusing on capital discipline and profitability to satisfy public market investors.

Core Business Performance and Financial Services Growth

Paytm’s core payments business, which constituted 55% of its FY26 revenue at ₹4,646 Cr, experienced a 20% growth. Notably, payment processing margins surpassed the 4 basis points mark in Q4, driven by the increasing use of profitable MDR-bearing instruments such as credit cards on UPI and EMI-based affordability products. Merchant Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) grew by 27% year-on-year to ₹6.5 Lakh Cr in Q4, with a notable acceleration in its growth rate. Consumer UPI Gross Transaction Value also saw robust growth, significantly outpacing industry expansion.

The financial services distribution segment demonstrated even stronger growth, with revenue increasing by 52% to ₹2,594 Cr, accounting for over 30% of the company’s total revenue. Paytm’s strategic choice of an asset-light model for this business, focusing on distribution rather than in-house lending, allows partners to manage capital and risk. Merchant loans represent a key product within this segment, with repeat borrowers now constituting over 50% of disbursements. The personal loans portfolio is also showing signs of recovery, and wealth management products, including equity broking and mutual fund SIPs, are expanding, albeit at an early stage.

AI Integration and Future Acquisitions

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is central to Paytm’s future strategy, with CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma describing it as an ‘operating system for the entire business.’ The company views the current AI transition as an opportunity for significant advancement. This conviction is supported by a 16% reduction in indirect expenses to ₹4,358 Cr in FY26, which Paytm attributes directly to AI-driven productivity gains. AI tools are reportedly accelerating development cycles and reducing software build costs.

The ‘AI Soundbox,’ deployed across millions of merchant locations, is evolving into a ‘small business operating system,’ offering business insights and customer notifications. AI is also enhancing fraud detection and loan collection processes. Beyond internal development, Paytm is actively pursuing acquisitions in the agentic AI space, focusing on companies developing AI agents capable of autonomous actions. The company also plans strategic investments in wealth management, insurance, and personal loan sectors in FY27, leveraging its substantial cash reserves to expand its offerings per consumer.

Market Outlook and Challenges

Paytm’s FY26 financial performance signals a potential inflection point, reflected in its stock price performance. However, the company acknowledges near-term challenges, including declining UPI incentives and modest growth in merchant subscription for payment devices. Despite these headwinds, Paytm is positioned on a stronger footing compared to the previous year. The key question for Paytm and similar platform companies remains their ability to maintain management discipline and balance sheet strength to pursue steady profitability while satisfying growth-oriented investors.
