OpenAI expands ChatGPT Ads to India, targeting free and ‘Go’ users to enhance pre-IPO revenue. Privacy is maintained with no user data shared with advertisers.

OpenAI has initiated its ‘ChatGPT Ads’ program in India, marking a strategic move to monetize the popular chatbot within one of its largest markets. This expansion targets logged-in adult users on both the Free and ‘Go’ tiers, the latter priced at Rs 399 per month.

These sponsored advertisements will appear distinctly labeled and visually separated at the bottom of ChatGPT’s responses. Conversely, paid subscribers across Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers will continue to enjoy an entirely ad-free experience.

Strategic Monetization and User Privacy

The company has underscored its commitment to user privacy, asserting that no user data, including chats, chat history, memories, or personal details, will be shared with advertisers. This ensures a clear separation between user interaction and advertising data.

  • Advertisers will solely receive aggregated campaign performance data, such as impressions and clicks, maintaining user anonymity.
  • Ads are explicitly prohibited for users under 18 years of age.
  • Sponsored content will not appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics, including health, mental health, or politics.
  • More than 50 brands are anticipated to launch ads this week as the program rolls out.

Key Numbers and Global Reach

OpenAI is further facilitating ad integration by launching self-serve access to the ChatGPT Ads Manager in India starting September 4th. Businesses will be able to set daily budgets from Rs 725.

  • ChatGPT has surpassed 1 billion weekly global users, highlighting its immense reach.
  • India stands as ChatGPT’s second-largest market, recording over 100 million weekly users as of February 2026.
  • The initial ad testing, announced in January 2026 and piloted in the United States in February, generated $100 million in annualized revenue within its first six weeks.

This program has already seen extensive global expansion, reaching Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and 31 European countries. The India launch leverages a significant user base as OpenAI prepares for an anticipated initial public offering, solidifying its revenue diversification strategy.
