ONGC Deepwater Drilling in Mahanadi Boosts India’s Energy Security

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has initiated deepwater exploratory drilling in the Mahanadi offshore basin. This move marks a critical advance in India’s ‘Samudra Manthan’ mission to unlock deep and ultra-deepwater hydrocarbon reserves.

• Location: Approximately 23 nautical miles from the Konark discovery
• Coast: Off the Odisha coast

This latest drilling campaign builds upon ONGC’s recent hydrocarbon discoveries at Utkal and Konark, significantly enhancing the exploration potential within the Mahanadi offshore basin.

Driving Force: National Energy Security

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader objective to expand offshore oil and gas exploration, a necessity highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a previous Independence Day address. Following this directive, the government opened nearly one million square kilometers of previously restricted offshore areas for exploration under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP).

To bolster its deepwater exploration plans, ONGC earlier this year launched DeepX, a dedicated Deepwater Exploration Mission Centre in Mumbai. This facility integrates the company’s geoscientific expertise, advanced data interpretation, specialized training, and global collaborations to accelerate offshore exploration.
