Your go-to Old Monk rum might soon look a little different on store shelves. Its maker, Mohan Meakin, is updating the labels and dropping a familiar claim after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) stepped in.
The FSSAI raised concerns about the rum’s composition and the use of added artificial flavors. They specifically questioned the “7 years old blended” claim, stating the product primarily uses neutral, unmatured spirit.
What prompted the change?
The FSSAI noted less than 5% of the blend was matured rum spirit.
This composition could potentially mislead consumers regarding the rum’s age.
Visibility of disclosures for added artificial or nature-identical flavors was also a point of contention.
In response to the scrutiny, Mohan Meakin has committed to revising its product packaging. The company will remove the “7 years old blended” claim. They also promised to ensure that any added flavors are prominently disclosed on the new labels.
The Bombay High Court reviewed the situation, further questioning how visible flavor disclosures currently are. The court has directed Mohan Meakin to submit new digitally printed labels for its review. It did not, however, grant interim relief against FSSAI’s prohibition order, meaning the FSSAI’s stance remains firm.
