NTPC’s ₹16.86 Lakh Crore Expansion: 244 GW by 2037
By Business Desk
NTPC plans a massive ₹16.86 lakh crore investment to boost its power generation capacity to 244 GW by 2037, diversifying into renewables, nuclear, and more.
NTPC, India’s largest power generator, has unveiled an ambitious strategy to nearly triple its power generation capacity to 244 GW by 2037. This significant expansion will involve a cumulative investment of approximately ₹16.86 lakh crore, equivalent to about $202 billion, through the fiscal year 2037.
Key Capacity & Investment Milestones
The strategic blueprint outlines a diverse energy portfolio, encompassing thermal, hydro, pumped storage, renewable energy, battery storage, mining, and nuclear power. This multi-faceted approach aims to bolster India’s energy infrastructure significantly.
- Target generation capacity of 149 GW by 2032.
- Specific goal of 60 GW from renewable energy sources by 2032.
- Total investment projected at ₹16.86 lakh crore ($202 billion) through FY37.
Driving India’s Nuclear Future
A crucial component of NTPC’s long-term vision involves a substantial push into nuclear energy, targeting a contribution of around 30 GW of nuclear capacity. This will be facilitated through its wholly owned subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam, and its joint venture, Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam, with Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
Immediate nuclear projects include the 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara project located in Rajasthan. Furthermore, the company is actively studying an additional 34 sites across 13 states for future nuclear power development.
Innovating Energy Storage Solutions
NTPC’s strategy acknowledges the increasing integration of renewable energy by prioritizing flexibility within the power system. The company is developing battery energy storage systems and pumped storage projects to achieve this.
Beyond conventional methods, NTPC is exploring advanced long-duration storage technologies. These include CO2 storage and redox flow batteries, which aim to reduce reliance on critical minerals that are conventionally used in energy storage.
Strategic Operational Focus
The company’s strategic priorities are clearly defined to support this massive expansion and ensure energy security. These initiatives are designed to optimize existing assets while aggressively pursuing new growth avenues.
- Completing ongoing projects efficiently.
- Accelerating the addition of renewable energy and storage capacity.
- Strengthening fuel security across its operations.
- Expanding nuclear operations significantly.
- Improving the efficiency and flexibility of its existing thermal power fleet.
Additionally, NTPC is developing India’s first 5.75 lakh tonnes per annum coal-gasification-based synthetic natural gas project. This innovative undertaking is specifically designed to directly substitute imported natural gas, enhancing national energy independence.
