The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has finalized a power purchase agreement for a new 110 MW solar power plant. This strategic move aims to cover nearly 60 percent of the electricity requirements for the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.

Project Overview and Timeline

The substantial solar facility, estimated to cost approximately ₹450 crore, will be constructed in Jaulan, Uttar Pradesh. Its commissioning is anticipated within the next 24 months, marking a significant step in sustainable infrastructure.

Power Distribution Mechanism

Once operational, the plant will deliver electricity through the Uttar Pradesh state grid to NCRTC’s substations located across Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. From these points, the power will then be distributed throughout the entire Namo Bharat corridor.

Under the terms of the agreement, NCRTC will acquire electricity from this plant at a fixed tariff for a duration of 25 years. This long-term arrangement offers greater predictability in managing energy costs.

Economic and Environmental Impact

This captive solar project is projected to yield notable financial and environmental advantages for the corridor. It aims to reduce reliance on conventionally generated power sources.

Annual electricity expenditure is projected to reduce by around 25 percent. Additionally, annual carbon dioxide emissions are expected to decrease by about 1.77 lakh tonnes.

Namo Bharat Corridor’s Current Performance

The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, which achieved full commissioning in February, has demonstrated growing operational success. It currently serves approximately one lakh passengers daily.

The cumulative ridership for the corridor has already surpassed four crore passenger journeys, indicating its increasing utility and public adoption.

This shift towards solar energy underscores a broader strategic effort to enhance the economic viability and environmental footprint of critical public transportation infrastructure in India.
