MTN Unlocks Fintech Value in Nigeria & Uganda
MTN Group is in the final stages of spinning off its financial-technology operations in Nigeria and Uganda. This strategic move aims to facilitate acquisitions of minority stakes, up to 30%, by strategic buyers like Mastercard.
CEO Ralph Mupita highlighted the complexity of these separations, emphasizing their importance in minimizing value leakage for the mobile-money unit. The company is not driven by specific timelines for these fintech ventures.
Key Financials & Partnerships
- MTN’s fintech business generated R28.8 billion ($1.7 billion) last year.
- It processed approximately $500 billion in transactions across 14 licensed markets.
- A significant partnership with Ant Group Co.’s Alipay unit is underway to revamp its mobile-money (Momo) ecosystem.
Expanding Services & Market Reach
MTN plans to augment its existing licenses in certain markets, including Nigeria. This will enable the provision of new services such as lending to customers and international remittance.
In Nigeria, where current licenses restrict these services, MTN is enhancing its banking license to compete more effectively. The Alipay platform is expected to go live in Nigeria in the coming weeks, signaling MTN’s aggressive push into Africa’s rapidly growing fintech sector.
Fintech CEO Serigne Dioum confirmed plans to lend against MTN’s balance sheet, further solidifying the company’s commitment to expanding its financial offerings.
