Meta and Reliance Forge AI Data Centre Partnership in India

Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with Reliance Industries Ltd. to establish its inaugural artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled data center in India. This significant collaboration marks a definitive move by Meta to bolster its AI infrastructure within the country, leveraging India’s vast user base and burgeoning digital economy.

The facility, planned for Jamnagar, Gujarat, will be constructed by Reliance and is designed with a substantial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW). Meta will operate the data center under a lease agreement, with provisions for potential future expansion to accommodate growing computational demands.

This initiative aligns with a broader global trend among leading technology firms, which are rapidly investing in and building out extensive AI infrastructure. Such investments are critical for meeting the escalating demand for sophisticated AI models, cloud computing services, and high-volume data processing capabilities across diverse sectors.

Deepening Strategic Alliance and Prior Investments

The partnership further solidifies the long-standing relationship between Meta and Reliance, which has seen several significant collaborations in India’s digital landscape. This latest venture expands their joint efforts into large-scale data infrastructure essential for advanced AI operations.

Their existing alliance includes a joint venture formed in August 2025, specifically dedicated to developing AI platforms and tools tailored for Indian enterprises. This initiative leverages Meta’s advanced Llama AI models and commenced with an initial investment of Rs 855 crore.

Within this AI platform venture, Reliance holds a majority stake of 70%, while Meta owns the remaining 30%. This ownership structure underscores a shared commitment to fostering AI innovation and adoption within India’s dynamic enterprise sector.

Earlier, in 2020, Meta made a substantial $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms, the digital services arm of Reliance Industries. This landmark transaction represented one of India’s largest foreign investments in its rapidly expanding technology sector, laying foundational groundwork for the current expanded partnership across digital services, AI technologies, and large-scale data infrastructure.

India’s Data Centre Market Poised for Significant Expansion

India’s data center industry is projected for substantial growth over the next decade, reflecting the nation’s accelerated digital transformation. According to analysis by IMARC Group, the market is expected to nearly double in size, reaching an estimated $13.11 billion by 2034.

This robust growth trajectory is primarily fueled by the country’s increasing internet usage, widespread adoption of cloud computing services, and the rising demand for powerful computing infrastructure. These foundational elements are essential to support complex AI workloads and advanced digital services across various economic sectors.

The new Jamnagar facility is anticipated to be a pivotal component of Meta’s overarching AI strategy within India, reinforcing its commitment to the market. Concurrently, it is expected to contribute significantly to Reliance’s strategic ambitions within the country’s burgeoning data center and AI ecosystems, further cementing their leadership in the digital infrastructure space.
