Mercuria Invests $3B in Copper & Zinc Mining for Critical Materials

Key Highlights

Mercuria Energy Group invests over $3B in copper and zinc mining, securing critical materials through equity and pre-payment financing amid global supply chain disruptions.

Mercuria Energy Group is making a significant strategic investment of over US$3 billion in upstream copper and zinc mining assets. The company is employing pre-payment financing and acquiring equity stakes as part of an initiative to gain greater control over the sourcing of critical materials, a direct response to ongoing global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical risks.

This strategy has led to Mercuria securing financing for copper mine production in Kazakhstan and Zambia, alongside establishing offtake agreements in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This approach marks a fundamental shift for commodity traders, moving beyond traditional intermediation to direct involvement in the extraction and processing of metals. Industry experts suggest this is a targeted focus on metals essential for the energy transition.

Further diversifying its involvement, Mercuria has acquired a 25% stake in an Indonesian aluminium smelter, representing its first equity investment in processing capacity. CEO Marco Dunand explained that the company’s strategy is underpinned by the long-term structural demand in energy and related sectors. He added that this approach helps mitigate market volatility, particularly in light of disruptions affecting crucial shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

This evolution positions commodity traders as integrated supply chain players, combining financing, equity holdings, and logistics to navigate an era characterized by disruption, resource competition, and shifting trade flows. This ultimately reshapes how essential critical materials are sourced and delivered to meet global demand.
