Meesho Tax Dispute Soars to ₹2,072 Crore in FY26
By Business Desk
E-commerce player Meesho faces a threefold increase in tax disputes, reaching ₹2,071.8 crore for FY26. The company is actively contesting the demands through appeals.
E-commerce platform Meesho faces a substantial fiscal challenge, with its tax disputes escalating over threefold to Rs 2,071.8 crore in the financial year 2025-26. This significant increase highlights a complex regulatory environment for the growing company.
The total demand includes a prior notice of more than Rs 572 crore from FY25, which Meesho has actively challenged and secured a stay order against. Additionally, income tax authorities issued a new demand of approximately Rs 1,499.74 crore for Assessment Year 2023-24, along with a show-cause notice for potential penalty proceedings.
In response to these demands, Meesho has filed a rectification request with the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax. The company has also lodged an appeal before the National Faceless Appeal Centre in Delhi, indicating its intent to contest the new charges.
Strategic Growth Amidst Fiscal Pressure
Despite these mounting tax challenges, Meesho’s Chairman, Managing Director, and CEO, Vidit Aatrey, characterized FY26 as one of the company’s strongest periods. The firm made substantial strategic investments during this time.
These investments primarily focused on user acquisition and advancing technology. While these expenditures temporarily impacted contribution margin and free cash flow, they are expected to cultivate a larger, more engaged, and ultimately more cost-efficient user base in the long term.
Expanding User Base and Financial Resilience
Operational metrics from Meesho’s annual report underscore its robust expansion. The company’s user base grew by 33%, reaching a total of 26.4 crore users. Furthermore, annual transacting sellers saw an 87% increase, bringing their count to 9.61 lakh.
Content-led commerce also emerged as a significant growth driver for Meesho. The platform recorded 63,213 active content creators who collectively generated over 1.4 million order-producing content pieces.
Financially, Meesho demonstrated considerable progress in narrowing its losses. The company reduced its losses to Rs 1,358 crore in FY26, a notable improvement from Rs 3,942 crore reported in FY25. Concurrently, its annual consolidated revenue expanded to Rs 12,626 crore in FY26, up from Rs 9,390 crore in the previous fiscal year.
The escalating tax dispute presents a substantial fiscal overhang for Meesho, even as the company reports significant operational growth and financial improvements. This dynamic situation highlights the dual pressures of aggressive expansion and increased regulatory scrutiny facing the e-commerce giant.
