MCD Explores Tokyo, NYC Waste Models for Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Saturday engaged in discussions with World Bank experts to strategize improvements for the city’s waste management system. Chaired by MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, the meeting focused on understanding successful international models.

Global Models Informing Delhi’s Strategy

Experts presented insights from three distinct international waste management approaches, each offering unique strengths to guide Delhi’s future strategy. The discussions highlighted specific operational frameworks designed to address urban waste challenges efficiently.

• Tokyo’s system is notably technology-driven, featuring 23 waste-to-energy facilities for large-scale municipal waste processing.
• New York primarily relies on private agencies for waste transportation and processing, frequently utilizing facilities located outside the city limits.
• Barcelona’s approach, part of its Zero Waste Plan 2021-27, emphasizes decentralization, waste reduction, segregation, and fostering changes in citizen behavior to lessen reliance on long-distance transport and large centralized plants.

MCD’s Vision for a Sustainable Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi aims to implement a comprehensive and sustainable waste management strategy for the capital. This strategy seeks to enhance overall efficiency, ensure financial viability, and minimize environmental emissions across various stages of waste handling.
