SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son is reportedly seeking $100 billion from Gulf investors to launch a new fund focused on acquiring and modernizing traditional businesses with AI.

SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son is reportedly looking to raise $100 billion from investors in the Middle East to establish a new fund. Unlike SoftBank’s traditional focus on early-stage technology ventures, this initiative aims to acquire established, non-tech companies and modernize them by integrating artificial intelligence and robotics.

The Operational Strategy and Roze

The strategy centers on using SoftBank’s specialized robotics unit, Roze, to improve the operational efficiency and value of these acquired firms. The ultimate goal remains taking Roze public at a high valuation.

OpenAI Scrutiny and Capital Sourcing

This move comes as SoftBank faces increased scrutiny regarding its significant $65 billion investment in OpenAI, which has yet to become a highly profitable enterprise. OpenAI is currently navigating delays related to its anticipated IPO.

While Son has a history of successfully securing capital from sovereign investors in the Gulf, such as Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala, the success of this new proposed fund remains uncertain.
