Manav Garg, Together Fund co-founder, is the new Executive Chairman of AI startup Emergent, signaling a strategic push into AI-driven business growth and operations.

Manav Garg Joins AI Startup Emergent as Executive Chairman Amidst AI Boom

Manav Garg, co-founder and managing partner of venture capital firm Together Fund, has been appointed as the executive chairman of artificial intelligence (AI) startup Emergent. This strategic move comes two years after Garg initially backed the company, signaling a deeper commitment to the burgeoning AI sector and its operational integration within businesses.

In a recent LinkedIn post, Garg outlined his new responsibilities, stating he will collaborate closely with Emergent’s leadership team on critical areas including strategy development, forging key partnerships, enhancing corporate governance, and scaling the business as it navigates its next growth phase. This appointment reflects a growing trend of seasoned venture capitalists taking operational roles within portfolio companies, particularly in high-growth technology segments.

Strategic Shift Towards AI-Driven Business Operations

Garg articulated his conviction that AI is poised to fundamentally transform business operations. He posited that while the initial wave of AI innovations primarily reshaped content creation and the current phase is focused on software development, the forthcoming era will see AI evolve into a core operating layer for enterprises. This vision underscores the rationale behind his transition into an executive role at Emergent.

His involvement with Emergent’s co-founders, Mukund and Madhav Jha, has spanned the last 18 months, during which their professional relationship deepened. Garg’s increasing engagement with the company’s overarching vision, product roadmap, and long-term strategic plans ultimately led to his decision to assume the executive chairman position. He emphasized that Emergent’s unique approach—focusing on enabling businesses to operate distinctively rather than merely accelerating software development—was a pivotal factor in his decision.

Despite his new operational duties at Emergent, Garg confirmed that this appointment does not signify an exit from Together Fund. He will continue to actively support and manage the venture capital firm’s diverse portfolio, overseeing investments across both its first and second funds. Together Fund, established in 2021 by Garg and former Freshworks CEO Girish Mathrubootham, specializes in backing early-stage startups across various technology domains, including AI, software, fintech, and broader enterprise technology solutions.

Accelerating Investor Interest in India’s AI Ecosystem

The announcement coincides with a period of steadily escalating investor interest in AI startups globally, as companies increasingly adopt AI-driven tools to automate processes and streamline workflows. Garg highlighted AI as one of the most significant opportunities to cultivate globally impactful technology companies originating from India, reflecting a bullish outlook on the domestic AI landscape.

The past few months have witnessed a notable acceleration in investor activity within the Indian AI startup ecosystem. For instance, Bengaluru-based AI startup Sarvam AI was reported in April to be in advanced discussions to raise a substantial $250 million, potentially valuing the company at approximately $1.5 billion. This round is anticipated to include significant backing from global investors such as Nvidia and Bessemer Venture Partners, underscoring international confidence in Indian AI innovation.

Sarvam AI has also been proactive in developing India-focused large language models and has launched a dedicated startup program aimed at nurturing early-stage AI companies. This initiative is expected to bolster the foundational growth of the AI sector in the region. Furthermore, investor focus has broadened to include specialized AI startups, indicating a diverse investment appetite.

Recent funding rounds include Gurugram-based AI video startup TrueFan, which successfully secured $10 million in a funding round led by Baring Private Equity Partners India and Z3Partners. Concurrently, Peak XV Partners is reportedly in talks to provide financial backing to Ringg AI, an enterprise voice AI startup, further illustrating the dynamic investment landscape.

Beyond traditional venture capital firms, the momentum in AI investment is also extending to larger corporate entities. Last month, Bajaj Finserv announced its intention to allocate between ₹1,500 crore and ₹2,000 crore (approximately $180-$240 million USD) into emerging technology ventures. This substantial investment will be channeled through a new dedicated unit specifically targeting startups in AI, fintech, and cybersecurity, signaling a broader institutional embrace of advanced technological innovation.
