L&T Innovation Fund Targets Early-Stage Indian Deeptech
By Business Desk
L&T Innovation Fund, Larsen & Toubro’s venture arm, pivots to invest $1M-$10M in early-stage Indian deeptech startups, focusing on prototype and validation stages.
The L&T Innovation Fund, Larsen & Toubro’s corporate venture arm, has significantly changed its investment strategy, now concentrating on early-stage deeptech startups across India. This pivot targets ventures at Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) 4-5, providing capital ranging from $1 million to $10 million per startup.
Refocusing Investment Horizons
Previously, the fund directed its investments towards mature international technology companies operating at TRLs 7 or 8. The new approach specifically seeks to back Indian startups in their prototype or validation stages, aiming to help them advance to TRLs 7 or 8.
This fund has executed eight global investments over the past five years.
The deployment range for each startup is set between $1 million and $10 million.
Strategic Support and Key Sectors
Beyond financial backing, the L&T Innovation Fund intends to provide crucial operational support, including access to partners and customers, facilitating go-to-market strategies. This leverages L&T’s significant presence in engineering and infrastructure to help scale new solutions.
Key sectors of interest include Artificial Intelligence.
The fund is also keenly focused on space technology and defense.
Further areas of investment span Industry 4.0 and the green energy transition.
The fund is particularly interested in founders possessing robust engineering backgrounds who are actively developing intellectual property, aligning with L&T’s broader interests in areas such as data centers, industrial electronics, and drone technology.
Outlook and Future Deployments
This shift towards early-stage investing introduces a higher risk profile compared to supporting companies closer to commercialization, forming part of L&T’s broader effort to cultivate a technological business advantage. The innovation fund functions as a venture capital arm and is not currently a primary revenue driver for the parent engineering company.
The immediate next phase for the fund involves the actual deployment of deals within the Indian ecosystem, which will serve as a critical indicator of its effectiveness in identifying and scaling high-potential ventures.
