Lockheed Martin is actively engaging North American producers to secure vital minerals, scandium and germanium, a strategic move to lessen its reliance on China. This initiative directly supports President Donald Trump’s broader push for defense contractors to bolster domestic supply chains for essential military equipment materials.

The defense contractor’s efforts are specifically concentrated on establishing long-term supply chain security for these critical materials. Both scandium and germanium are indispensable for key components found in advanced aircraft and sophisticated infrared sensors, highlighting their strategic importance. This redirection aims to systematically move away from current foreign dependencies, particularly those in China.

Strategic Mineral Sourcing Initiatives

• Lockheed is in active negotiations with NioCorp Developments for scandium supplies, which are anticipated to originate from NioCorp’s Nebraska mine. Production from this facility is currently expected to commence in 2028.
• Separate discussions are also underway with Teck Resources and 5N Plus to secure crucial germanium supplies.

Despite these proactive steps to localize sourcing, the transition to a fully domestic supply chain presents notable challenges. North American mining and processing capabilities currently exhibit limitations, while Chinese suppliers continue to offer highly competitive pricing in the global market.
