LIC Targets Market Leadership & Fintech Push

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) aims to reinforce its leadership in the life insurance sector and boost its contribution to national development, stated CEO and MD R Doraiswamy. This strategic push comes as the insurer nears its platinum jubilee.

  • LIC maintains a significant market share of nearly 60% despite increasing competition.
  • The company manages assets exceeding Rs 57 lakh crore.
  • Its real estate portfolio is valued at approximately Rs 60,000 crore.

Doraiswamy emphasized LIC’s symbiotic relationship with India’s development since its 1956 establishment, portraying it as a crucial institution dedicated to the nation’s welfare.

Expanding Influence & Digital Future

LIC’s long-term strategy focuses not just on retaining its leading position but also on expanding its influence. It aims to support the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Formed through the nationalization of 245 insurers in 1956 with an initial capital of Rs 5 crore from the Indian government, LIC now boasts an extensive network across India and operations in 13 other countries.

Looking ahead, LIC is actively considering the creation of a fintech arm. This could be achieved through strategic investments or organic development to meet evolving digital requirements and drive innovation by collaborating with fintech and insurtech firms. The insurer also plans strategic investments in specialized entities to optimize returns on policyholders’ funds.
