LIC IPO Underperforms: Shares Still Below Issue Price Post-Bonus

LIC’s 2022 IPO disappointed investors. Shares remain below issue price, even after a bonus, highlighting valuation and market challenges.

The Life Insurance Corporation of India’s (LIC) 2022 initial public offering, despite high expectations, disappointed investors, with shares initially listing nearly 9% below the issue price.

By March 2023, the stock had fallen by almost 44%, highlighting significant post-listing challenges for the country’s largest insurer.

Valuation Challenges and Market Headwinds

Despite LIC’s fundamental profitability as a leading life insurer, the primary issue stemmed from its aggressive valuation during the IPO.

The market had pivoted towards profitability growth, a metric where private sector counterparts demonstrated superior performance.

  • LIC’s Value of New Business (VNB) margin stood at 15%-16% at listing.
  • Private sector rivals like SBI Life and HDFC Life reported VNB margins of 27%-28% during the same period.
  • Global market conditions, including surging inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes, further dampened investor sentiment.
  • Government ownership exceeding 96% also raised concerns regarding operational flexibility.

Business Improvement Versus Stock Reality

Since its listing, LIC’s business operations have shown genuine improvement, marked by rising profits and an enhanced solvency ratio.

The VNB margin improved to 21.2% by FY26, indicating stronger underlying performance.

However, the stock’s recovery has been complicated by financial adjustments, notably a 1:1 bonus issue in April 2026, which effectively halved the per-share price.

When adjusted for this bonus, LIC’s stock value on July 30, 2026, remained approximately 11% below its original IPO price.

This trajectory underscores a critical investment principle: a fundamentally strong company does not automatically guarantee a strong stock performance, emphasizing the importance of meticulous valuation and understanding financial adjustments.
