Japanese firms are accelerating their Rs 7 lakh crore investment in India, potentially fulfilling the pledge years ahead of schedule. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal confirms rapid progress.

Japanese firms have invested over Rs 1 lakh crore in India within the past 10 months, significantly accelerating towards Tokyo’s 10-year, 10-trillion-yen investment pledge. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal expressed confidence that this Rs 7 lakh crore commitment, initially set for 2025, could be met within three to four years.

This rapid pace reflects a notable acceleration, as Japan previously achieved a 5-trillion-yen investment target in India within five years. The current doubled target, set in 2025, now appears on track for earlier completion.

Doubling Japanese Presence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has outlined an ambitious goal to double the presence of Japanese enterprises in India, aiming to increase their numbers from 1,500 to 3,000. Minister Goyal urged Japanese firms to expand their investments beyond traditional sectors. He highlighted opportunities in manufacturing, financial services, insurance, and pension funds.

Catalysing Deep Tech & Innovation

To foster advanced technological development, Minister Goyal proposed establishing a Deep Tech Capital Corridor. This initiative aims to mobilize patient capital, specifically for early-stage research, deep-tech innovation, and commercialization efforts. He also stressed collaboration through a Two-Way Innovation Bridge.
