ISRO Empowers Private Sector for Space Vehicle Manufacturing

By Business DeskISRO Empowers Private Sector for Space Vehicle Manufacturing

ISRO shifts focus to advanced research, delegating space vehicle manufacturing to the private sector. India aims for a $44B space economy by 2033.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is undergoing a significant strategic shift, moving its primary focus from manufacturing launch vehicles and routine satellites. This crucial responsibility will now be largely taken over by India’s private sector and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

This reorientation allows ISRO to concentrate on advanced research, development, and executing major, complex space missions. The change is expected to substantially boost India’s entire upstream and downstream space industry capabilities.

Ambitious National Space Goals

  • A crewed orbital spacecraft is planned for next year.
  • The ‘Bharatiya Antriksh Station’ is targeted for establishment by 2035.
  • An Indian Moon landing is projected to occur by 2040.
  • The Indian space sector is aimed to expand from $9 billion to $44 billion by 2033.

To support this ambitious growth, the government has implemented key legislative frameworks. These include the New Space Policy 2023 and the FDI Policy 2024, designed to facilitate private investment and innovation.

Private Sector’s Expanding Role

Private Indian companies are already demonstrating global competitiveness in various space capabilities. There is a growing emphasis on developing downstream applications, such as Earth observation and satellite communications.

These applications are crucial for diverse real-world uses across multiple sectors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded India’s progress in the space sector, highlighting its attractiveness to investors and its inspiration for younger generations.

His remarks coincided with National Space Day, which commemorates the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Looking ahead, the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission is anticipated to launch within the next four months.
