India’s Telecom Future: C-DoT Poised for Global 6G Leadership

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently expressed strong confidence in the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), stating its technical capabilities are set to transform India into a global telecommunications leader. He believes the world will increasingly rely on India for telecom technology, particularly as the nation advances towards 6G.

India’s Growing Global Telecom Footprint

Speaking at C-DoT’s 43rd foundation day, Minister Scindia highlighted India’s significant achievements in the global telecom landscape. The country has emerged as a key player in supplying advanced gear for modern networks.

• India is one of only four countries worldwide supplying advanced telecom gear for both 4G and 5G.
• It is also the fifth nation globally to successfully develop its own 4G stack.

Scindia noted India’s journey from lagging in 4G to marching alongside global progress in 5G, positioning the country to now lead in 6G development. The focus for this next generation of connectivity is on trusted, resilient, intelligent, and secure systems.

C-DoT’s Role in National and Global Innovation

C-DoT, a state-owned entity, is pivotal in this vision, with Scindia urging it to transition its innovations from laboratory research to global market deployment. This push aligns with India’s broader goal of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.

• C-DoT unveiled approximately 14 quantum products at the event.
• Some of these quantum products are already deployed within live network environments.

Minister of State for Communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, further lauded C-DoT’s contributions, specifically praising the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ app. This application has been instrumental in combating device theft and financial fraud.

Impact of ‘Sanchar Saathi’ App

The ‘Sanchar Saathi’ app, developed by C-DoT, has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in protecting citizens from financial crimes. Its functionalities directly address the risks associated with lost or stolen mobile devices.

• The app has successfully traced approximately 36 lakh stolen devices.
• It has blocked nearly 57 lakh lost or stolen phones, preventing unauthorized access.
• These efforts have collectively prevented an estimated Rs 4,000 crore in financial fraud.

Scindia reiterated the app’s critical role in safeguarding individuals’ life savings, underscoring its importance beyond mere device recovery. He emphasized India’s unique opportunity to significantly influence future 6G development.

India stands at a crucial juncture, leveraging indigenous technological advancements and policy support to carve out a leading position in the global telecommunications sector, particularly in the impending era of 6G.
