India’s GST Collections Surge to ₹2 Trillion in August 2026
By ThePip Desk
India’s GST revenue neared ₹2 trillion in August 2026, a 14.8% YoY jump, driven by strong import collections. Domestic revenue also saw a 9% rise.
India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in August 2026 reached nearly ₹2 trillion, marking a 14.8% increase compared to the previous year. This substantial rise, reported by the Ministry of Finance, nonetheless represents a sequential decrease from the ₹2.11 trillion collected in July.
Understanding August’s Collection Dynamics
The overall growth in GST revenue was significantly bolstered by import-related collections, which saw a robust surge. This component notably outpaced the expansion observed in domestic GST revenue.
- Gross GST collections: ₹2 trillion (14.8% year-on-year increase)
- Import-related GST revenue: ₹62,604 crore (29% year-on-year surge)
- Gross domestic GST revenue: ₹1.37 trillion (9% rise)
Saurabh Agarwal, a tax partner at EY India, highlighted that the strong performance of import-related GST indicates an ongoing reliance on external sourcing in specific sectors. He emphasized the need for policy initiatives to promote deeper localization and import substitution within these areas.
Net Collections and Refund Trends
After accounting for refunds, net GST collections for August demonstrated an 8.3% year-on-year increase. Despite this annual growth, net collections experienced a month-on-month decline of just over 7%.
- Net GST collections: ₹1.68 trillion (8.3% year-on-year increase)
- Total GST refunds: ₹31,795 crore (68% year-on-year jump)
- Domestic refunds: ₹18,490 crore (nearly 73% increase)
- Refunds of GST paid on imports: ₹13,305 crore (almost 62% increase)
Fiscal Year Cumulative Performance
For the fiscal year 2026-27, cumulative gross GST collections from April to August have shown consistent growth. Net collections for the same period also recorded a solid increase.
- Cumulative gross GST (April-August FY27): ₹10.43 trillion (11% year-on-year increase)
- Cumulative net GST (April-August FY27): ₹8.89 trillion (9% year-on-year increase)
Looking ahead, Agarwal anticipates that revenue collections are likely to trend higher in the coming months. This projected increase is primarily driven by an expected boost in consumer spending during the upcoming festive season.
