India’s Fertilizer Exports Surge, But Import Dependence Remains

India’s fertilizer exports jumped 52%, yet persistent import reliance for key nutrients poses food security risks. Explore the trade dynamics.
India’s fertiliser sector presents a compelling study in supply chain dynamics, where a recent surge in exports, while notable, merely serves as a nuance within a broader, deeply entrenched structural dependence on international markets. From fiscal year 2024 to 2026, the nation’s fertiliser exports climbed by a significant 52%, reaching 0.47 million tonnes from 0.31 million tonnes, according to recent data.
This export growth, however, must be contextualized against the sheer volume of India’s import requirements. Over the identical three-year period, fertiliser imports expanded by 36.09%, escalating from 20.7 million tonnes to a substantial 28 million tonnes. This disparity underscores a fundamental imbalance, where even robust export expansion does not shift the primary gravitational pull towards global suppliers for critical agricultural inputs like urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and muriate of potash.
An examination of India’s export portfolio reveals a diverse mix, predominantly comprising potassium sulphate, various vegetable and organic fertilisers, potassium chloride, ammonium nitrate, and organic manures. Key markets absorbing these exports include Brazil, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the UAE, the Maldives, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Notably, shipments to Brazil surged by 175%, from 0.11 million tonnes in FY24 to 0.31 million tonnes in FY26, while exports to Sri Lanka increased dramatically from 816.28 tonnes to approximately 33,000 tonnes over the same timeframe.
The true vulnerability of India’s fertiliser economy lies not just in the volume of finished product imports, but in the pervasive reliance on foreign feedstock for domestic production. India sources approximately 20% of its urea, nearly 50% of its DAP (primarily from the Gulf region), and almost 100% of its muriate of potash from international markets, including significant volumes from Russia and Canada. This deep integration into global supply chains extends further, with about 85% of natural gas for urea manufacturing, 90-95% of phosphatic rock phosphate, and half of the phosphoric acid also imported.
This intricate web of dependencies means that India’s effective reliance on international fertiliser markets stands at an estimated 68-70%. This structural reality renders the nation’s agricultural sector, and by extension its food security, highly susceptible to geopolitical disruptions, trade policy shifts, and unforeseen supply shocks. The framework of ‘supply chain fragility’ becomes critically relevant here; even with domestic industrial capacity, the upstream reliance on global commodities creates a leverage point for external volatility.
Therefore, while the growth in fertiliser exports offers a positive data point for India’s trade balance, it does not fundamentally alter the nation’s strategic exposure. The underlying structural pattern of deep import dependence for both raw materials and key finished products remains the dominant force. Understanding this inherent fragility is paramount for policymakers and market participants alike, as it dictates the long-term resilience of India’s agricultural output against an increasingly unpredictable global backdrop.
