Indian Startup Funding Plummets in April: Key Trends

Indian startup team in a somber meeting, reflecting declining VC funding.
Key Highlights
Indian startup VC funding declines sharply in April’s first week to $117M. Fewer high-value deals and Middle East conflict impact capital inflow. Key sectors analyzed.
Venture capital funding into Indian startups experienced a sharp decline in the first week of April, with the absence of high-value deals contributing to the downturn.
Total funding for the week amounted to $117 million across 20 transactions. In comparison, the previous week saw $328 million from 22 deals. The similarity in deal numbers highlights the impact of fewer high-value transactions this week.
This decline reflects ongoing challenges in the startup ecosystem regarding capital inflow, exacerbated by uncertainty stemming from the conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on recovery timelines.
The weekly funding amount was the third-lowest recorded, with previous lows of $77 million in January and $90 million in March.
During the week, VC funding was allocated across sectors including D2C, aerospace, and fintech, with pre-Series A and Series A rounds experiencing the most activity.
Key transactions included Spacetech startup Bellatrix Aerospace, which raised $20 million from Cactus Partners, along with Hero Investment Office, 35 North Ventures, Indusbridge Ventures, Monarch Holdings, Inflexor, Pavestone, GrowX, Startup Xseed, and Survam Partners. Savings platform Bachatt secured $12 million from Accel, Lightspeed & Info Edge Ventures. Voice AI startup Gnani. ai raised $10 million from Aavishkaar Capital and Info Edge Ventures. NowPurchase, a marketplace for metal manufacturers, raised Rs 80 crore (approximately $8.5 million) from Bajaj Finserv, Info Edge Ventures and Orios Venture Partners.
The trend raises questions about the sustainability of the current momentum and potential shifts in fund flow direction.
