Indian Railways is set to implement a new “Tank to Tap” Water Filtration System at roughly 20,000 locations across its network. This comprehensive overhaul, which includes water coolers, follows a critical review by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw of a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on drinking water quality.
Understanding the New Water Filtration System
The core of this initiative is to ensure safe drinking water for passengers, directly addressing the observations raised in the recent CAG report. Immediate corrective measures have been ordered to enhance water safety and quality across the vast railway network.
A senior official confirmed that this project is deemed a top priority and will undergo direct monitoring at the Board level. The progress of the system implementation and detailed water quality reports will be published periodically to maintain full transparency regarding the improvements.
Key Corrective Measures Underway
The directive outlines several critical actions to improve the water infrastructure and quality. These measures target various points within the water supply chain to ensure efficacy.
One primary step involves the complete replacement of existing water tanks throughout the railway network. This ensures that the foundational storage for drinking water meets new, higher quality standards.
Furthermore, strict compliance with regular water quality testing is mandated. This testing will occur at both the initial source points and the final outlet points, verifying water safety at every stage before consumption.
Centralized monitoring and accountability mechanisms are being established to oversee the entire system. This ensures that performance can be tracked and responsibilities clearly assigned across the operational chain.
Finally, scheduled cleaning and maintenance of all storage tanks are now compulsory. This proactive approach aims to prevent future contamination and ensure the sustained quality of drinking water.
