Indian Oil Fuels Mauritius: New Energy Security Deal

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has finalized a long-term agreement to supply petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel to Mauritius, a move aimed at significantly enhancing the island nation’s energy security. This landmark deal was established through direct sales and purchase arrangements, complemented by a government-to-government Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Mauritius relies entirely on imported petroleum products, making its economy vulnerable to global price volatility and disruptions in supply chains. The new arrangement with IOC seeks to mitigate these risks by providing a stable and predictable fuel source.

Deepening India-Mauritius Energy Ties

India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, visited Mauritius to formalize these crucial agreements. This partnership marks the first instance an Indian public-sector oil company has secured such a comprehensive fuel supply deal with a country outside South Asia, highlighting deepening energy cooperation.

The timing of this agreement is particularly relevant given current instability in West Asia and ongoing disruptions to shipping routes, which have heightened global concerns over energy security. India’s role as a reliable supplier in the Indian Ocean region gains further prominence.

Mauritius faces an annual fuel import bill exceeding $1 billion, and this new arrangement is expected to offer a more stable supply environment. While specific volumes and commercial terms remain undisclosed, the broader MoU establishes a framework for future collaboration in the oil and gas sector.

This strategic alliance not only strengthens bilateral cooperation with Mauritius, recognized as a vital maritime partner for New Delhi, but also reinforces India’s expanding influence as a key energy provider in the Indian Ocean region.
