Indian benchmark indices recorded a second consecutive day of losses on August 28, 2026. The BSE Sensex closed 539 points lower, a decrease of 0.7%, while the NSE Nifty fell by 116 points, or 0.4%.
The market downturn was primarily driven by declines in metal, PSU Bank, and cement shares amid mixed global cues.
Market Movers and Sectoral Trends
Among the day’s top performers were Kotak Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, and Asian Paints. Conversely, NTPC, HDFC Bank, and HCL Tech led the losers.
Both the BSE 150 Midcap and BSE 250 SmallCap indices also traded in negative territory. Sectoral analysis showed buying interest in telecommunication and healthcare, while metal and banking sectors faced selling pressure.
Research Analyst Rahul Shah of Equitymaster cautioned investors about the risks associated with rising valuations, even for those engaged in passive investing.

Tata Power Faces Legal Setback
Conversely, Tata Power shares declined by more than 5% following a legal setback. This dispute involved a $490 million arbitration award, with the Singapore International Commercial Court rejecting Tata Power’s challenge concerning a bid by Kleros Capital Partners for a Russian coal asset.
Tata Power intends to appeal the decision to the Singapore Court of Appeal within the stipulated 28-day period. This ongoing legal uncertainty has raised investor concerns regarding potential financial implications.
