By Business DeskIndia-Zambia Resume Critical Mineral Investment Talks

India and Zambia restart critical mineral investment talks on August 26. India seeks vital raw materials for its growing economy, focusing on copper and other essential commodities.

India has resumed discussions with Zambia regarding investments in copper and other critical minerals. Preliminary talks were held on August 26 as New Delhi seeks raw materials for its expanding economy.

This move highlights India’s increasing reliance on overseas sources to meet the rising demand for essential commodities crucial to its rapid economic growth.

Previous Stalls and Strategic Expansion

Earlier discussions between India and Zambia had encountered obstacles, primarily due to a lack of assurances from Lusaka.

  • The previous talks stalled over assurances on mining rights for a 9,000 square kilometre area awarded to India last year.
  • Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), India’s primary vehicle for securing critical mineral supplies, is evaluating investment opportunities in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Russia, and Indonesia.
  • KABIL is also currently in discussions regarding a project in Malawi.

India’s strategy involves engaging several African countries on a government-to-government basis to acquire critical mineral blocks, alongside exploring prospects in Australia and Latin America.

India’s Copper Demand Intensifies

Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, is considered crucial for fulfilling India’s increasing requirements for copper and cobalt.

  • India ranks as the world’s second-biggest buyer of refined copper.
  • Copper imports have seen a sharp increase since the 2018 closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper smelter.
  • The Indian government projects a need to import 91% to 97% of its copper concentrates by 2047.

The Federation of Indian Mineral Industries suggests encouraging Indian companies to pursue brownfield and near-production projects, alongside securing long-term offtake arrangements.

These renewed discussions with Zambia are pivotal for India’s long-term strategy to secure essential mineral supplies and support its economic trajectory.
