India secured the top global position for the number of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and ranked third in funds raised during the financial year 2025-26. This is according to the latest SEBI Annual Report, which highlighted the resilience of India’s capital markets despite broader global uncertainties.

While the primary equity market showed strength, corporate bond mobilization experienced an 8.4% decline, marking its first drop in four years. Conversely, public debt issuances saw a significant increase.

The report also noted a 15-year low in foreign portfolio investor (FPI) ownership within the Indian market. This contrasted sharply with a record 17% equity holding by domestic institutional investors (DII) by March 2026.

Regulatory Enhancements and Future Focus

SEBI implemented a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) to improve price discovery, aiming to align with international market standards. Mutual fund participation expanded, with significant contributions from Tier-3 cities driving monthly SIP contributions to an average of over 16,400 crore rupees.

With 62% of retail investors influenced by financial influencers on social media, SEBI plans to introduce stronger investor protection measures. Upcoming initiatives include Project Jagrook for investor awareness, an AI-enabled WhatsApp campaign, and simplified nomination norms.

Additionally, SEBI will launch a fast-track mechanism for alternative investment funds and the SEBI Setu portal. A pilot project for the tokenization of corporate bonds using distributed ledger technology is also in the pipeline.
