India’s Economy to Be 3rd Largest; Defence Exports Soar

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently affirmed India’s strong economic trajectory, stating the nation is on course to become the world’s third-largest economy. This projection comes alongside a significant surge in India’s defence exports and indigenous production capabilities.

Singh noted that India currently stands among the top five global economies. He suggested that the country could have achieved the third-largest economy status within six months to a year, had the recent West Asia Crisis not impacted its progress. Despite this, the Minister expressed optimism about reaching this significant milestone.

Key Defence Sector Growth

The growth in India’s defence sector highlights a strategic shift from import dependence to robust indigenous production and export. This transformation is underpinned by several key figures:

• Defence exports surged from approximately Rs 600 crore to around Rs 50,000 crore after the BJP-led government assumed power in 2014.
• Overall defence production escalated to Rs 1.80 lakh crore, a substantial increase from previous figures.

This impressive growth underscores India’s strengthening self-reliance within defence manufacturing. The nation is actively enhancing its domestic capabilities across various crucial defence systems.
