India proposes a ‘Shark Tank’-style pitching series to connect Indian and Japanese startups with investors, boosting deeptech and data center investments.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has proposed a ‘Shark Tank’-style pitching series to link Indian and Japanese startups with investors and partners. This initiative aims to deepen commercial ties, facilitating investment and scaling between the two nations through virtual sessions.

Fostering Deeptech & Data Centers

Goyal extended an invitation for Japanese businesses and startups to collaborate with India, emphasizing that stronger economic cooperation would lead to broader prosperity. He suggested establishing a ‘Japan-India deeptech capital corridor’ to provide patient capital for early-stage ventures.

India is highlighted as a comprehensive market for product design, testing, and large-scale deployment.

The nation presents itself as an attractive destination for data centers, having already secured approximately $200 billion in investment commitments from major global hyperscalers. Tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Digital Connexion have invested billions of dollars in AI infrastructure and data centers.

The Indian government also supports this sector with a proposed tax holiday until 2047.

Strategic Bilateral Vision

During his meeting with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei, Goyal outlined a comprehensive four-pillar partnership. This framework focuses on increasing trade, strengthening technology cooperation, boosting investments, and promoting tourism between India and Japan.

India’s strengths in areas like AI and semiconductors are seen as key for supporting Japanese technological advancements. These sectors are expected to constitute a $150 billion market.

Goyal also advocated for increased cooperation among universities, incubators, and venture funds.

This strategic move underscores India’s intent to position itself as a global hub for innovation and investment, leveraging its robust market and technological prowess in collaboration with Japan.
