India Plans 5-8 New Semiconductor Plants, AI Training for 1 Crore Youth

India aims to establish 5-8 new semiconductor plants and train 10 million youth in AI skills within the next decade, boosting its tech and economic landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s projection to establish an additional 5-8 semiconductor manufacturing plants within the next seven to eight years. This initiative builds on the three facilities already operational in the country, whose products are intended for export markets.

Modi emphasized the critical role of chips in the modern digital economy during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort. He highlighted their necessity across electronic goods, medical equipment, and transportation systems, stating that a world without chips would cease to function.
India’s strategic focus on semiconductors began with the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021. This mission established a substantial incentive framework, providing significant fiscal support to encourage domestic manufacturing.
The framework specifically targeted various segments of the semiconductor industry. These included silicon fabs, compound semiconductor facilities, assembly and testing units, and chip design operations.
Recognizing the evolving needs, the government further strengthened its commitment this year by introducing India Semiconductor Mission 2.0. This updated mission features a significantly increased financial outlay to accelerate growth in the sector.
Beyond hardware, the Prime Minister also addressed the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technology. He pledged a government commitment to equip a substantial portion of the nation’s youth with essential AI skills.
This training initiative aims to leverage technological growth by preparing one crore youth for future opportunities. The program is set to be implemented over the coming year.
