India Eyes Preferential Trade Deal with SACU

India has commenced negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), a five-member economic bloc. This strategic move seeks to reduce tariffs for Indian exporters across crucial sectors within the SACU market.

The Southern African Customs Union comprises South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, and Eswatini. This bloc collectively represents a market of nearly 70 million people with a combined economic output of $500 billion.

Strategic Objectives of the PTA

The primary goal of this trade agreement is to grant Indian exporters, particularly those in the automotive, pharmaceutical, and industrial machinery sectors, lower tariffs. This initiative follows India’s recent successes in establishing bilateral trade agreements with developed nations.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, stated that a fair, equitable, and balanced agreement would bring significant benefits to both India and the SACU member countries. He further suggested this agreement could lay the groundwork for a broader relationship with the larger 55-nation African Union.

Current Trade Landscape with SACU

Currently, the trade volume between India and SACU remains relatively modest, with approximately 500 items forming the majority of their bilateral trade. Despite this, India is recognized as the second-largest supplier to the SACU group of countries.
