India’s ambitious push for renewable energy is significantly outpacing its domestic battery storage manufacturing capabilities, leading to a critical reliance on imports for essential battery cell components. Industry experts highlight the immediate necessity to scale up storage systems to support the growing renewable capacity and ensure grid stability.

The Critical Storage Gap

The nation’s domestic battery manufacturing capacity currently stands at less than 1%, specifically 2 GWh. This stark figure falls far short of the projected demand, which is estimated to reach approximately 260 GWh by the year 2026.

Achieving self-sufficiency in battery storage for India is a long-term endeavor, likely requiring more than a decade to bridge the substantial gap between current production and future needs.

Addressing Grid Stability Needs

Experts caution against using import dependence as a reason to slow down the deployment of new renewable energy projects. They stress that storage solutions are crucial now to effectively manage the intermittent nature of solar power and maintain grid stability.

Companies like NTPC are actively integrating storage systems into their operations. NTPC has been allocated 5 GWh of battery energy storage capacity under a specific Viability Gap Funding scheme.

This initiative aims to optimize existing thermal generation assets and ensure a reliable power supply during non-solar hours, showcasing practical steps towards energy resilience.

Navigating Global Dependency

Despite significant policy ambitions, India remains structurally dependent on imports for battery components. This dependency is particularly pronounced when contrasted with countries like China, which currently dominates the global battery supply chain and manufacturing landscape.

The current scenario underscores a strategic challenge for India: balancing its rapid renewable energy expansion with the foundational requirement of robust, domestically-produced energy storage infrastructure for long-term energy security.
