India Rejects US Ethanol Imports: Domestic Policy Drives Fuel Blending
By ThePip Desk
India confirms no commitment to US ethanol imports for fuel blending, emphasizing its domestic policy governs the Ethanol Blended with Petrol Programme.
India has made no commitments on importing ethanol from the United States for fuel blending as part of ongoing trade negotiations, the Commerce and Industry Ministry confirmed. The government stressed that India’s fuel blending programme and ethanol procurement are governed entirely by the nation’s domestic policy requirements.
Key Aspects of India’s Ethanol Blending Programme
Under its established domestic policy framework, India sources all ethanol used for fuel blending exclusively from domestic producers. This policy ensures that the Ethanol Blended with Petrol Programme operates independently of foreign imports for this specific application.
Crucially, India does not currently import ethanol from the US for purposes of fuel blending. This internal sourcing mechanism is fundamental to the programme’s operational integrity.
The country’s retail fuel landscape is progressively being transformed by E20 fuel. This blend, consisting of 80 per cent petrol and 20 per cent ethanol, plays a central role in India’s energy strategy.
Progress on India-US Trade Discussions
Negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States commenced in March. These discussions have proceeded through eight distinct rounds of engagement.
Earlier in February, both countries successfully finalised the terms of reference for the first phase of their proposed bilateral trade agreement. This milestone outlines the scope and direction of their continuing trade dialogue.
