India’s power demand surges to a record 256 GW amid a severe heatwave. IMD reports temperatures between 40-45°C across most regions. Details inside.

India’s power demand peaked at a record 256 GW on Saturday, spurred by a significant heatwave affecting much of the country.

The surge in demand surpasses the 243 GW recorded during the summer of 2025. Officials attributed the comparatively lower demand last year to favorable weather conditions and an early monsoon season.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum day temperatures ranged from 40-45°C across most of India. Exceptions included the western Himalayan region, northeast India, the west coast, and the southern parts of peninsular India.
