Key Highlights

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw predicts a significant rise in India’s memory chip manufacturing, driven by AI data center demand and global shortages. New players and expanded production expected.

India’s Memory Chip Boom Expected

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw anticipates a significant boost in memory chip manufacturing across India. This surge is fueled by the escalating demand from AI data centers and a persistent global supply shortage.

New companies are expected to enter the market, while existing players scale up production under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Driving Factors & Initiatives

  • India’s data center investments are projected to exceed USD 200 billion soon, requiring billions of gigabytes of storage.
  • ISM 1.0 supported 48 tech startups, laying the groundwork for future growth.
  • ISM 2.0 priorities include chip design, attracting equipment manufacturers, and indigenous production of essential chemicals and gases.
  • More fabs (chip manufacturing plants) and ATMP (chip packaging) units are also in focus.

Why India Attracts Investment

Vaishnaw highlighted three key factors making India attractive for global hyper-scalers and data center investments:

  • A large pool of skilled talent.
  • A robust and recently upgraded electricity grid.
  • Significant availability of renewable energy, accounting for nearly 50% of the country’s power generation capacity.

India’s modern grid provides a distinct advantage over older infrastructure in many other nations.

Addressing Environmental Concerns

To mitigate environmental impact, India is implementing stringent norms and promoting innovations like water cooling methods. These can reduce water consumption by up to 70%.

A Mordon Intelligence study estimates India’s data center water consumption could reach 358.66 billion liters by 2030.
