Amidst a volatile global energy landscape, exacerbated by the ongoing Iran conflict, a pivotal structural challenge to India’s energy security has emerged: not merely the availability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), but its efficient consumption. Pune Gas has formally urged the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to institute India’s inaugural national LPG Efficiency Policy Framework, identifying demand-side optimization as the critical next frontier.

The impetus for this policy framework stems from the significant increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices, which has directly impacted a broad spectrum of Indian businesses. Restaurants, hotels, hospitals, food processing units, laundries, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and various manufacturing sectors are all contending with elevated operating costs, highlighting a systemic vulnerability to global energy market fluctuations.

While India has commendably maintained consistent LPG supplies despite international disruptions, the long-term resilience of its energy ecosystem hinges on optimizing how this crucial fuel is utilized. This perspective shifts the framework of energy security beyond mere procurement, integrating demand-side management as an equally vital component. Such an approach acknowledges that reducing consumption pressure is as effective as securing supply in mitigating geopolitical and economic risks.

Pune Gas’s proposal details several mechanisms to achieve this efficiency. Key among these is encouraging Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to promote the use of larger 47.5-kg LOT cylinders. This shift is not merely about volume; it is a structural improvement designed to reduce wastage, enhance safety protocols, minimize pilferage, and thereby optimize overall LPG supplies within the commercial and industrial segments.

Furthermore, the framework advocates for nationwide awareness campaigns on efficient LPG usage, fostering a culture of conservation across industries. It also calls for increased collaboration between the government, OMCs, and industry stakeholders to standardize best practices and implement policy incentives that accelerate the adoption of advanced, efficient LPG systems. Jesal Sampat, Executive Director and CEO of Pune Gas, underscored that measuring and improving fuel efficiency is essential for reducing operating costs, easing national demand, and strengthening the broader energy ecosystem, declaring LPG efficiency a national priority.

This push towards efficiency is further bolstered by indigenous innovation, exemplified by Pune Gas’s LPGenius system. Developed under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, this technology demonstrates how domestic solutions can enhance LPG efficiency, operational safety, and cost optimization for commercial and industrial users, directly supporting the proposed national framework. Pune Gas has offered to collaborate with the Ministry and OMCs, providing data, insights, and supporting pilot projects to cultivate a more efficient and sustainable LPG ecosystem in India.

Some might argue that energy security primarily involves diversifying import sources or increasing domestic production. However, this perspective overlooks the immediate and tangible gains achievable through demand-side efficiency, which directly mitigates the financial impact of price volatility on end-users and reduces overall national demand pressure, offering a more robust and immediate form of resilience.
