India and Japan’s bilateral trade is set to reach $50 billion by 2030, driven by economic complementarities and increased business engagement, according to an Assocham report.

India’s bilateral trade with Japan is anticipated to reach $50 billion by the year 2030, a significant increase from current levels. This projection comes from Assocham, highlighting the deepening economic ties between the two nations.

The growth trajectory is attributed to increasing economic complementarities and more robust business engagement. This indicates a substantial rise from the previously targeted trade volume for the middle of the decade.

Key Trade Projections

  • Bilateral trade is projected to reach $50 billion by 2030.
  • This marks a significant increase from $27.47 billion targeted for 2025-26.

These figures were released in an Assocham report on India-Japan Bilateral Relations during a recent Roundtable on Startups. Nirmal Kumar Minda, President of Assocham, noted the broad expansion of relations over time.

Areas of cooperation between India and Japan have expanded considerably. These include crucial sectors such as development cooperation, infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, investment, and trade.

Boosting Technological Engagement

Given the rapid global technological advancements, Minda offered specific recommendations for Japan. He suggested initiatives to further strengthen technological and academic partnerships with India.

  • Japan should consider establishing more research and development centers in India.
  • There is a need for additional innovation centers and global capability centers (GCCs).
  • Fostering engineering partnerships with Indian academia would also be beneficial.

Such steps would leverage India’s technological talent and contribute to mutual economic growth. The strengthening of these ties underscores a long-term strategic economic partnership.
